If You’re Going to San Francisco

‘Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair’

San Francisco exceeded all my expectations and there were moments when I imagined what it would be like to live there. I decided I would have an apartment in Haight and work for Pinterest, I would spend my summer holidays in Palm Springs and my Christmases in Vegas. Yep, I had it all planned.

I found the city relaxed and informal, a bit like Brighton without the kiss me quick hats. It was very bohemian, and the 60s music and fashion addict in me enjoyed hearing about the 1967 Summer of Love. I had Scott McKenzie on repeat in my head.

I tried to be as present as possible, to capture every moment for my memory rather than through my lens. We often sat and observed, taking in the colours, atmosphere and people. Not to mention sampling the food, which was pretty damn good!

I can thoroughly recommend San Francisco as a holiday destination, the trams and vibrant street life made exploring the city an absolute joy. I’ll most definitely be returning.. with some flowers in my hair.

Moments of note..

Taking a boat to the chilling island of Alcatraz and following in the footsteps of Clint Eastwood!

Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on an open top bus – it had to be done.

Burger, fries and a chocolate milkshake at Burger BarMacy’s, with a view of Union Square.

Seeing the famous painted ladies at Alamo Square Park, t’was like being on TV!

Drifting around the extremely photogenic Haight-Ashbury and North Beach.

Visiting the exquisite Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park.

Pancakes at an American diner overlooking San Francisco bay. Tres romantic!

The adorable seals on Pier 39, I could have watched them all day long.

Further info: we stayed at the Stanford Court Hotel and I would definitely stay there again.

When I look at your San Fran photos they look amazing but I just completely missed out on this side/the love of it when I was there… maybe I wasn't there long enough nor researched it enough before I went.

Thank you! When we checked into our hotel I asked where the popular streets were and followed their recommendations. My only holiday research was to watch Escape from Alcatraz!

San Francisco has always been on my list of must-see places but I'd kind of given up on the idea until the kids are a little older (can't face another long-haul journey with them after NZ). Your photos have perfectly captured everything I always dreamed about the place and I'm determined to get there one day xx
