HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
Most of the time I sleep like a baby but on occasion, I find dropping off and staying there can be a challenge. Especially if I’m stressed or something is worrying me. When this happens, I address my evening routine and put a few things in place to regain my sleep mojo!
A comfortable bed is vital when it comes to a good night’s sleep. We should consider replacing a mattress if it’s showing signs of wear or is over eight years old. When I replaced mine it made such a difference. I like cotton or linen bedding and a synthetic duvet that feels like goose down. The combination is like sleeping under a cloud!
Always wear what you’re comfortable in. I have a friend who won’t wear pyjamas and another who wears two jumpers! I prefer to sleep in cotton and I have a range of different night clothes to match the seasons. This season I’m mostly wearing pj’s!
There’s definitely a link between how long it takes me to get to sleep and how late I was on the internet. To combat this, I’ve set a 9pm phone alarm to remind me to switch off. If you’re having trouble sleeping and you’re using technology in bed, I would certainly recommend switching off earlier.
Create a routine that works for you and stick to it. Regular sleeping hours support the internal body clock and make getting to sleep and waking up easier.
There are so many ways to unwind, from reading to having a long soak in the bath. I like to tidy away the day and plan for the next and I do this while listening to some calming tunes.
If I’m finding sleep a challenge I put a few drops of lavender oil in a teacup of boiling water next to my bed. I also have the window open slightly to let in a little air. A bedroom should feel like a calm retreat and so it’s worth investing a little time in creating a tranquil space. I like my room to be clean and tidy and everything to feel organised. I sleep well when my life and my things are in order!
