FIND AN OASIS OF CALM
I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I sway between feeling at ease and feeling overwhelmed. Stress has a tendency of creeping up and before I know it my balanced diet, exercise and meditation have been replaced with pressing deadlines. Annoyingly when I need self-care the most, it’s the first thing to go!
For many years I would tell myself I’d catch up on my sleep at the weekend, or I’d ignore how I was feeling and focus on my next holiday. This would stop me enjoying the small everyday moments and I’d often find I’d pick up a cold as a result.
Nowadays when I notice I’m drowning in commitments, I hit pause, take a step back and assess the situation. Although the last thing I want to do when I have a lengthy to-do list is stop, I know I’ll achieve more if I take good care of myself. So today I’m sharing a few things to try when life gets busy.
1. Edit, simplify and prioritise
The most valuable thing we can do when we’re being pulled in different directions is assess what’s important. It’s good to stop and list everything including commitments, obligations and hobbies to decide if there’s anything we can drop, tweak, combine or postpone. I often find there are things I can remove or put off until later in the year. Establishing what’s important, simplifying and prioritising will help to restore the balance. 2. Exercise a little self-care
If you’re feeling overwhelmed it’s wise to indulge in a little self-care. This could involve looking at your diet, how much sleep you’re getting, if you’re doing enough or any exercise and so on. Looking after your body will better equip you to cope with a busy schedule. And you’ll find your day is so much easier when you’ve had a good night’s sleep. It’s also beneficial to talk about how you’re feeling to a family member or friend. Sharing problems can make them feel smaller and it sometimes enables us to reach a solution. 3. Book in some ‘me time’
This one will vary from person to person and you’ll know what activities you need. For some, this might be a few moments of solitude with a good book, a soak in the bath or getting lost in a film. While for others it may look like time with a friend, catching up with family or trying something new. Only you will know what lifts your spirits and makes you feel like yourself again.
4. Switch off and get outside
A great way to ease a busy mind is to switch off and get outside. Walking through a forest, taking in a beautiful view or watching the crashing waves are just a few things that will calm the mind. If you live in the city and don’t have time to get away, sitting in a park can refresh and restore. Just remember to put your phone on silent, be present and enjoy the sights and sounds around you. 5. Change your scenery
Escaping from the daily grind can work wonders. It clears the mind and helps us to see things more clearly. If you can spare a day to explore somewhere new you will almost certainly return feeling a little lighter. And if getting away isn’t an option, why not visit somewhere local? This could be a tourist attraction, museum or gallery. A change in scenery can refocus the mind helping us to better deal with a full schedule.
There are so many ways to ease the pressure when you’re feeling bogged down with commitments. It’s worth trying things out and sticking to what works best for you. If things don’t improve perhaps consider talking to a doctor or making a drastic lifestyle change. Long-term stress and overwhelm are not things to be taken lightly.
